Answer:

Acoustics is a branch of physics that deals with the study of mechanical waves in gases, liquids, and solids including topics such as vibration, sound, ultrasound and infrasound. A scientist who works in the field of acoustics is an acoustician while someone working in the field of acoustics technology may be called an acoustical engineer. The application of acoustics is present in almost all aspects of modern society with the most obvious being the audio and noise control industries.

Hearing is one of the most crucial means of survival in the animal world and speech is one of the most distinctive characteristics of human development and culture. Accordingly, the science of acoustics spreads across many facets of human society—music, medicine, architecture, industrial production, warfare and more. Likewise, animal species such as songbirds and frogs use sound and hearing as a key element of mating rituals or marking territories. Art, craft, science and technology have provoked one another to advance the whole, as in many other fields of knowledge. Robert Bruce Lindsay's "Wheel of Acoustics" is a well accepted overview of the various fields in acoustics.[1]

⠀⠀⠀⠀Acoustics

Acoustics is the science and technology of sound that deals with the effect of sound on humans.

The word acoustics also refers to the quality of sound on humans which is heard or transmitted in a room or a building.

Two major fields in the study of acoustics are :-

  • Architectural acoustics
  • Environmental acoustics

Architectural acrostics deals with making rooms, halls and buildings quiet, which provide better condition for listening to speeches, music and concerts. Acoustics plays a vital role in the planning and construction of large auditoriums , prayer halls, music rooms as well as libraries.

The acoustics quality of any room is affected by various factor like size and shape of the room the ability of ceiling, walls and floor to exclude unwanted sound; and the use of furnishings made of sound–absorbing material. Another important factor which determine the acoustic quality of a room is the the way the room reflects sound. Sound made by the speakers or a musical instrument bounceback and forth against the ceiling, walls, floor and other surfaces.

These reflections of a sound make up its the reverberation . The revebration time of a room is the time in which a sound does a way to one- millionth of its original energy. Reverberations should last about one second in an auditorium designed for speech, and two seconds in a music hall.

Environmental acoustics involves the control of noise pollution which is a major problem in residential areas of metropolitan cities. Agents which causes noise pollution includes motor vehicles, aircrafts, factories, industrial plants, and heavy construction equipments.

➢ In many countries, laws require industries to reduce factory noise below specific levels, aur workers are order to use protective earplugs or earmufts to save their ears from being damaged.
