Liberalism and nationalism came to be increasingly associated with revolution in many regions of Europe such as Italian and German states, the provinces of Ottoman Empire, Ireland and Poland. The first upheaval took place in France in July 1830.
The July Revolution sparked an uprising in Brussels, which led to Belgium breaking away from the United Kingdom of the Netherlands. The struggle for independence in Greece started in 1821 and the Treaty of Constantinople of 1832, recognises Greece as an independent nation.
The development of nationalism did not come about only through wars and territorial expansion. Culture played an important role in creating the idea of the nation. Art and poetry, stories and music helped express and shape the nationalist feelings.
Romantic artists and poets the glorification of reason and science. Focussing on emotions, intuition and mystical feelings, they tried to create a sense of a shared collective heritage as a basis of nation.
Romantic German philosopher Johan Gottfried Herder (1744-1803), claimed that true German culture was to be discovered among the common people–das volk. Poland which no longer existed as an independent territory, kept nationalist feeling alive through music and language.

- The period between 1830 and 1848 was marked by a lot of tensions and turmoil in Europe. Europe had witnessed the dramatic rise of two philosophies, liberalism and conservatism. The liberal nationalists or the educated middle class planned ways to overthrow monarchy and bring in a government of the people.
