Chinua Achebe is one of the most powerful writers of this century. Through his brief yet brisk sentences he creates a distinct Visual Imagery that exposes human hypocrisy and contrasts it with the subtle sentimentality of humanity.
In the poem 'A Mother in a Refugee Camp' , Achebe most dexterously juxtaposes the horror of death in a camp and the tender love of a poor mother who has lost her child.
The poem is based on the plight of the children in a camp suffering from diarrhoea. They are hungry and starving with protruding stomachs.
Their mothers have given up on them having lost all hopes of survival.
But one single mother has held on to her motherliness and her love and affection for her son.
Although her son is no more she holds on to him most tenderly as Madonna in Pieta. She combs and parts his hair the way she did when he was healthy and running to school.
She still tends to him as if he is alive.
