A word processing document may be thought of as a collection of text, although it may include embedded graphics, tables and even spreadsheets. Word processor documents are of most use in preparing letters, papers, meeting minutes, and so on.

A spreadsheet is a rectangular matrix of cells which may be programmed to contain text, numbers or formulae. These formulae can perform operations on other cell contents, or external data. Spreadsheet packages include comprehensive graphical features and data handling tool sets. So spreadsheets are very powerful, programmable tools which may be used for many different tasks ranging from simulations through to complex calculations and presenting tabular data.
