Franz:
He is a sensetive and honest schoolboy who is reluctant to go to school due to his incomplete assignment and other distractions, but later accepts his fault of ignoring his lessons and feels guilty for M.Hamel(his french teacher) as well as for his ignorant behavior towards french languange while attending his last lesson.
M Hamel:
He is portrayed as a sincere and strict teacher of the French language who is passionately patriotic.He appears to be strict but deep inside he has an unforgettable bond with his students as well as french language.His love is clearly visible when he breaks down at the end of his last lesson.

- Franz was a boy who lived in the district of Alsace. He studied in one of the schools in Alsace. He was not find of attending school and studying. He liked the world more than the environment of the school. Learning French was something he never gave much more importance to. He was scared of his French teacher M. Hamel. The time when the people of Alsace came to know that as per the new law, German would be taught in the school in the place of France, he experienced a different feeling for French although. Apart from being surprised, felt sorry for himself for not paying attention while studying French. He was really disappointed and sorry to attend the last lesson of French in his school.

- In the story The Last Lesson which is written by Alphonse Daudet, M Hamel is a French teacher who is so passionate about French language, according to him French is the clearest, most beautiful and logical language. He has forty years of faithful service in the school of Alsace and Lorraine. According to him, language is the key to a person's sense of freedom.
