Give a brief introduction of Ashoka’s Dhamma?
Answers
Answer:
After the infamous Kalinga War (ended 261 BCE), Asoka was deeply grieved by the massacre that the war had caused. As a result, he decided to propagate Dhamma or the righteous living with a moral purpose. For this, he appointed Dhamma Mahamattas (literally, the officers in charge of propagating Dhamma) and asked them to preach from door to door to make people aware of the righteousness. He approached Buddhism and Brahmanical texts to reform society via Dhamma. Asoka tried to synthesize various social norms. The aspects of Dhamma were developed chronologically via the rock edicts (Major and Minor).
There are several arguments presented by the historians which show that Asoka became a Buddhist for a short span of his life. Under his Dhamma Policy, he erected several stupas throughout the subcontinent. He adopted Buddhism in his life but never imposed it on others.
