A Brief Introduction-
Shakespeare is recognized all the world over as the greatest poet and dramatist. He is honoured as the Prince of Poets and King of Dramatists. Paying a glowing tribute to him, Ben Jonson said, "He was not of an age. but for all time." He is the crown and glory of the English stage. For more than three hundred years his eputation has remained constant and steadfast. The vicissitudes of times and changes in human tastes have in no way affected his reputation. He is the Proteus of the drama who changes himself into every character and enters into every condition of human nature. He wrote tragedies and comedies with equal felicity and art :
"And such was Shakespeare whose strong soul could climb Steeps of sheer terror, sound the ocean grand Of passion deep, or over Fancy's strand Trip with his fairies, keeping step and time." His mind was "The universal mirror of mankind." He was an intellectual ocean whose waves touched all shores of thought. His large heart embraced all Nature :
"Nature herself was proud of his designs,
And joy'd to wear the dressing of his lines to And joy Shakespeare was born at Stratford-on-Avon on 23rd April, 1564. He did not have much formal education. The financial position of his family was not good. He left his home at the age of eighteen and reached London in search of some job. He started his career in London as an assistant at some theatre and gradually became an actor and a playwright. Me remained in London for twenty-four years and in the course of
this period he rose to be the greatest dramatist the world has ever produced.
He married Ann Hathaway in 1583. Having risen to his eminence, he came back to his home town, bought the biggest house there and passed the rest of his life in peace and leisure. He died on the 26th April, 1616 and was buried at the Parish Church. The following epitaph, written by himself before his death, was inscribed on his grave:
"Good friend for Jesus sake forbear;
To digg the dust encloased heare;
Bleste be man spares the stones,
And curst be he moves my bones."
