We don't really think much about Virginia in the first half of the story. She seems to be an innocent, sweet girl, but nothing amazing. Yet she ends up being the heroine of this story.

Virginia runs across the Canterville ghost one day as he is moping in his room. She expresses her sorrow about his situation, but explains that she does wonder if he deserves it since he killed his wife. She soon learns that his wife's brothers had exacted revenge on him by torturing him and starving him to death. Upon hearing this, she exclaims, 'Starve you to death? Oh, Mr. Ghost, I mean Sir Simon, are you hungry? I have a sandwich in my case. Would you like it?' This kind girl even feels pity on a man she believes to be an awful man, and she is willing to share her food with him.

He continues to explain that all he wants is rest. But there is no rest for him, because he is a ghost. Yet she can help him. Since she is a pure, sweet, kind girl, who is full of love for everyone, she can help him find his rest. He warns her that if she does this it will be quite frightful for her, but that no harm can befall her. The thought of helping the ghost frightens Virginia, but she eventually responds 'with a strange light in her eyes. 'I am not afraid… and I will ask the Angel to have mercy on you.'
