The languages spoken in India belong to four distinct types as under:

  1. The Indo-European, specifically its Indo-Aryan branch;
  2. The Dravidian;
  3. The Austro-Asiatic: the Kol  and the Munda branches, and
  4. The Sino-Tibetan: the Tibeto-Burman branch.
  • Amongst the Indian tribes languages belonging to Dravidian family are spoken by the Khonds (Orissa they speak Kui), the Gonds (Madhya Pradesh), the Toda (Nilgiri Hills) & Malto (Rajmahal Hills).
  • The Munda, Santal, Kharia, Ho, Korku, Bhumij, Gadaba, Khasi, the Nicobarese & the Savra, speak Austro-Asiatic languages. The tribes speak sino-Tibetan in the Himalayan region and in East India.
  • There are about 23 tribal languages which are spoken by over  than 100000  people. These are Gondi, Santhali, Oraon,  Bhili, Ho, Lambadi, Vagdi, Mundari, Banjari, Meithei,  Bhilali, Kondh, Garo, Savra, Kui, Khasi, Bara Bodo, Korku, Paraja, Lushei, Koya, Mikir, & Maria. Santhali has maximum no. of speakers, then Mikir. Other languages fall between these extremes.
