Most of American poetry that stands out is critique in nature, American poetry dates back in the late 17th century. Since then it has grown in all manner especially in the 19th and twentieth century being the peak if this art. Some of the American poets in the 20th century include Wallace Stevens, T.S Elliot's, Robert frost and many others. Towards the end of the 20th century, more stress was put on poems by women especially African American women, Hispanics and Chicanos. Poetry in the current America has witnessed rich inclusions and expansions such as the spoken word poetry.
