Mr. Van Daan is the head of the family that hides in the Secret Annexe along with the Frank family. He was a friend who worked with Anne's father in the business. Mr. Van Daan's actual name is Hermann Van Peas but Anne refers to him as Mr. Van Daan in her diary. Anne says that he was intelligent, opinionated, pragmatic and somewhat egotistical. He was also temperamental and spoke his mind rather openly, not afraid to cause friction with his wife, with whom he quarrels frequently and openly. Mr. Van Daan and Anne usually managed to upset each other, and it was just the opposite with Margot, Anne's sister, whom he liked very much. Mr. Van Daan is a loud and rash person and he certainly does not appear to figure in Anne's good favour.
