He is a hard task master and students like Franz, who are not good learners, are in great dread of being scolded by him. The latest order of the Prussian rulers upsets him.

M. Hamel was a typical village teacher. Although, sometimes he dismissed the class so that he could go fishing, he was a strict teacher and the students were afraid of his ruler. He had been serving for forty years and the village people and the students love and respected him. When he got the notice that he would have to leave and that French would not be taught anymore he was heartbroken. Throughout the class, he remained sad and solemn and explained to the whole class that 'mother tongue' was one of the most important possession of the people. He also advised them to give up their habit of putting off doing important things till the next day. At the end of the class he broke down and his patriotism came out when he wrote 'Vive La France' on the blackboard before dismissing the class.
