Explanation:

✔Character sketch of Ausable:-

⭐Ausable is the main character of the story the midnight visitor. He is a secret agent or a spy who had a small room, on the sixth and top floor, of a gloomy French hotel. Ausable was a short and stout (fat) man, with no looks similar to a secret agent. Though he spoke French and German passably, but he had never lost his American accent which he had brought to Paris from Boston twenty years ago.

⭐Fowler (a young writer) got disappointed after his meeting with Ausable, because he was not the exact one that Fowler thought of him to be. Instead of having messages slipped into his hand by dark-eyed beauties, he only get a prosaic telephone call making an appointment in his room.

⭐Although he is not Physically strong and do not have exact looks like a secret agent but at the end of the story it is clearly known that Ausable has a great presence of mind and absolutely amazing intelligence.

Explanation:

Ausable is the protagonist of the story, The Midnight Visitor by Robert Arthur. Ausable is a secret agent, dealing in espionage who defied the idea of the stereotypical secret agent, disorganized, fat and lethargic.

His rival, Max is a lithe and rugged agent. Fowler, a writer, fascinated by the world of espionage begins a conversation with Ausable and goes back with him to his hotel room but are cornered by Max. Ausable handles the situation beautifully by bluffing that there are police agents on the way and stays ice cold, even in the face of certain death. He threatens Ausable with death if he does not give up some documents.

A knock at the door sets off Ausable’s sharp mind. He bluffs that it was the police he had called complaining of a break-in. Max jumped out of the window to himself, hurtling to an uncertain fate. However, it was just a waiter with Ausable’s drinks, once again proving never judge a book by its cover.
