Major Percy Stokes was Mrs. Bramble’s brother. He often visited
the Brambles and took keen interest in matters concerning Harold. He was also
of the opinion that the secret of Bill’s real profession must be kept hidden
from Harold. He believed Harold must be kept away from Bill’s professional
life, as it could harm him in many ways. He played quite an important role in
dissuading Bill from fighting against Murphy, the American boxer. He was a
compulsive talker. He used to borrow money from his sister, and perhaps never
returned it. He was quite scared of being boxed by the angry Fischer as he held
him responsible for dissuading Bill from the most important fight of his
career.
