CHARACTER SKETCH OF MR. OTIS
The full name of Mr. Otis was Hiram B Otis. He was an American Minister . Mr. Otis was a very bold and fearless person. He did not believe in the existence of ghosts. He was totally materialistic , rational and ruthless in his attitude. He believed that money can buy anything, even a ghost. he bought the canterville chase, though he was told that it was a haunted house.
He was bold and faced the ghost fearlessly . when the ghost appeared at night like a terrible old man, he remained calm. when he saw that heavy chains of the ghost were making noise, he gave the ghost a bottle of lubricant instead of fearing him.
He was a very affectionate and loving father. he loved his daughter, Virginia the most. when she was lost , he did his best to find her. he decides to send telegram to the police inspectors to look for her. when he thought that the gypsies might have kidnapped her, he went Bexley, a village, well-known for gypsies.
But, he failed to find her there. when the ghost gave jewels to Virginia, he believed that they rightly belonged to the Lord's family . he offered them to the Lord canterville but he refused. he did not like the British convections . he was extremely fond of Duke of Cheshire, but objected the titles because he was a thorough Republican.

Mr Otis is clearly forceful and direct. He openly speaks his mind as illustrated when he speaks to Lord Canterbury about the ghost. He tells the lord that if such a thing existed, it would be used in a roadshow or put on display in a museum. This further indicates that he is not at all superstitious and is a realist, one who deals with things as they are
