A TEST TO DISTINGUISH BETWEEN ETHANOL AND ETHANOIC ACID AS FOLLOWS -
1) Reaction with NaHCO3
On Adding Sodium Carbonate Carboxylic acid gives CO2 gas whereas Ethanoic Acid does not give CO2
2) PH paper - Ethanoic Acid turns blue litmus red whereas no such reaction takes place with Ethanol .
3) Heated - when Ethanoic Acid is heated the H2 gas burns with effervescence whereas when Ethanol is heated H2 gas does not burns with effevecense.
