Kingdom Fungi :-

The fungi are among the most primitive members of the plant kingdom and the study of the fungi is called Mycology. The fungi are non chlorophyllous, nucleated, non vascular, thallophyta micro organism and due to lack of chlorophyll they do not prepare their own food.

Nutrition :-

As the fungi lack chlorophyll and cannot prepare their own food and dependent on other organisms for their nourishment. On the basis of nourishment the fungi are of three types :-

Saprophytes - The fungi which obtain their food from decayed moist leaves, moist dead wood or by some other useless rotten residues or organic substances are called saprophytes. The fungi like Rhizopus, Penicillium etc. are the examples of saprophytes.

Parasites - The fungi which obtain their food by taking or sharing the food with other organisms are called parasites. The fungi like Ustilago, Puccinia etc. are the examples of harmful parasites.

Symbiotic - The fungi which coexist with other plants and facilitate water and mineral salts and plants prepare food for them are called symbiotic. The microbe Lichen is the best example of symbiotic fungus.

Reproduction :-

Almost all fungi are reproduced by two different ways - Sexually and Asexually. The mycelium of many species produces both asexual spores and sexual structures. There exists at least 100000 species of fungi, some are one-celled like the yeasts, others are complex like mushrooms.

Along with certain heterotrophic bacteria, the fungi are the major decomposers and their activities are essential for the recycling of inorganic resources in the biosphere. Some fungi of parasitic forms cause disease in plants and animals.
