Maggie is the youngest of three children of her mother. Her mother dies of excessive drinking and the villages decide to adopt the three children. The two older ones are adopted but not Maggie because she suffers from a back problem which is a result of an injury she had when she was young.
While, the little nameless girl is the main character of the story(The match girl). She comes from a poverty -ridden background. Even a pair of shoes can't be afforded for her.
Her obedience can be seen when she agrees to go out in the cold to sell the matches. She craves for hunger, love and warmth guided her to hallucinate the situations in the light of the matches. She is set a perfect example of class differentiation and child abuse.
