Overlapping :

* a community or a group possesses many social differences and division which overlap one another this is called overlapping.

* this gives rise to tension was situation and sometimes disintegration.

* for example Northern Ireland where question are divided into catholics and protestants catholics are poor and suffer discrimination therefore there is situation of tension.

Cross cutting:

* in spite of many differences division in the society the people find their way to accommodate each other.

* this leads to development of society and not the situation of tension.

* for example Netherlands. It is also a Christian country which divided between catholics and protestants but they are both equally rich and poor therefore situation of tension does not arise.
