In the first Canto of his mock epic poem The Rape of the Lock, Alexander Pope introduces the character of Belinda. The chief guardian sylph named Ariel sends her a sweet dream about a handsome and fair youth who uncovers a fact to her that she is always protected by an army of countless spirits.

These spirits had lived a life of female gender of human beings on the earth and they safeguard the female chastity. The chief of the supernatural army i.e. Ariel warns her to be cautious of men and prophesizes about an untoward happening that may take place on that particular day.
