                                     Gender-based Violence

We all know that India is a democratic country, a country of liberty and peace. People as well as the Government is trying their best to dissolve all kinds of discrimination from our country. But unfortunately, being a patriarchal country, gender-based violence or violence against women is increasing day by day.

Inequality of power between men and women is the main reason of the gender-based violence in our country. Since childhood, it is taught that men are superior to women. Men are capable of doing strenuous jobs while women are meant to do household activities. Such inequality forces men to dominate women both in their houses as well as in their workplaces.

Verbal violence is the most common violence that almost every woman faces in their daily life. They have to face insults, humiliation or even abusive words. Both homemakers and working women have to face it. The more they protest, the more the violence increases. Even in our patriarchal society, sisters have to listen to abusive words from their brothers.

Psychological violence is the most dangerous one that emotionally tortures women. It is a kind of silent killer that gradually destroys a woman. It places women in such a place where they feel alone even in their own houses. As psychological violence can’t be seen, women can’t share it or express it to anyone.

Sexual violence is increasing at a rapid rate with the advancement of technology and modernization. In our society women are treated like sexual object which can be mishandled at any time. Women are taught to be silent even after being sexually harassed only for the fear of not getting married later.

Until and unless such patriarchal mentality gets changed, such gender-based violence can never be stopped. Proper education and upbringing of both boys and girls are the only way to dissolve gender-based discrimination from our country.
