There was an unusual silence in the school that day. Usually there was a huge hustle and bustle which could be heard out on the streets but that day, everything was as quiet as sunday morning. There was no opening and closing of benches. All the students were already seated on their benches. The teacher's great ruler instead of rapping on the table, was under M. Hamel's arm. The elders of the village were occupying the last benches of the class with their note books to pay a tribute to their mother tongue and their teacher.
