Lederer-Manasse Reaction
Explanation:
- The mechanism through which phenol is converted into para and ortho hydroxy benzyl alcohol it is called a Lederer-Manasse reaction.
- In this reaction, the reactants involved, products formed and catalyst used as follows:
Reactants:
Phenol
Formaldehyde or methanal
Products:
Para hydroxy benzyl alcohol
Ortho hydroxy benzyl alcohol
Catalyst and time:
Acid or alkali for Six days
- When phenol is treated with methanal in the presence of acid or base as catalyst for six days, the methanal attacks the ortho and para position of the phenol.
- Due to this, the compounds called Para hydroxy benzyl alcohol and Ortho hydroxy benzyl alcohol are formed.
- This reaction is also called a Hydroxy methylation of phenol and is a very slow process.
- The mechanism involved in the reaction is given in the attachment.
