Answer:

India has always been a developing country and has come a long way since then. It was always demeaned and called the "land of snake charmers" and black magic. Sadly, people still say that, but we have proved to ourselves time and again that we are more than just snake charmers and superstitious people. It is no secret that Indians were extremely superstitious and closed-minded. Widowed women used to burn alive with their dead husbands as a vision that both would go to heaven for the act. Human rights were not at all established in the country, at least in cases of lower caste people and women.

But, desperate times call for desperate measures, and many eminent people came up to change the conditions and bring reform to society. Pre-independent days we were fighting against the British with the hope that they would run away, making India an independent country, but it was all in vain. It is also a fact that without some good British men, the abolition of such scared rules would not have been possible. Raja Ram Mohan Roy established the Brahmo Samaj to abolish child marriage, polygamy, caste system, etc. Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar successfully started the concept of widow remarriage. It was not easy for these men as well. Ram Mohan passed away early due to the immense workload and his people not supporting the good deeds he wanted to establish. It was indeed a sad phase. Not only were we dominated and tortured by the British, but we also tortured each other. The social thought was to bring good change and the leaders showed us the hope of an independent India so that the upcoming generation leads a peaceful right and fights for what's right. The thought was to ensure equality and respect among ourselves.
