Maximum amount of wool produced in India i.e. 85% is carpet grade. 10% wool produced in India is coarse grade. With 44% production of wool, Rajasthan leads all states in India. Rajasthan is followed by Jammu & Kashmir(13 percent), Karnataka (12 percent) Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Haryana (23 percent).
The woollen industry started in India in the form of a cottage industry.
→ The first mill was established at Kanpur. Thereafter such mills were started at Dhariwal and Bengaluru.
→ The woollen textile industry of India is concentrated in Punjab, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Haryana, Jammu-Kashmir Karnataka and Rajasthan.
→ Today, maximum woollen mills are located in Punjab. Maharashtra comes next in the order. There are woollen mills in Uttar Pradesh also.
→ Main centres of woollen industry are Dhariwal, Ludhiana and Amritsar in Punjab, Mumbai in Maharashtra, Kanpur, Shahjahanpur, Agra and Mirzapur in Uttar Pradesh, Ahmedabad and Jamnagar in Gujarat, Panipat and Gurugram in Haryana, Bikaner and Jaipur in Rajasthan, Srinagar in Jammu-Kashmir and Bengaluru in Karnataka.
