As the coronavirus spreads across the globe, "the threat of a pandemic has become very real," World Health Organization officials said Monday.

The coronavirus has sickened more than 111,000 people and spread to more than 100 countries.

WHO officials emphasized that the virus' spread could still be controlled.

The spread of the new coronavirus has nearly reached pandemic proportions, officials from the World Health Organization said Monday.

"Now that the coronavirus has a foothold in so many countries, the threat of a pandemic has become very real," WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a press briefing.

But he added: "It would be the first pandemic in history that could be controlled. The bottom line is we are not at the mercy of the virus."

The name in short is Covid-19 which includes the year 2019 when it was first discovered. The virus is said to have originally spread from bats to man at Wuhan in China.
