The Quit India Movement

Explanation:

• The Quit India Movement was the last large scale movement of the freedom movement. The failure of the Cripps Mission and the growing threat of Japanese aggression brought about a radical change in Mahatma Gandhi's attitude towards the British Government.
• The Quit India movement was launched at Bombay session of all India congress commitee at Bombay on August 7 1942 by Mahatma Gandhi. The main demand was end of the British rule in India.
• The British government was closely monitoring the situation and had made efforts to crush the rebellion.Many important political leaders were arrested including Mahatma Gandhi, Maulana Azad.
• There were hartals, mob violence, the people began to attack all government's properties.

The movement was put down with ruthless brutality. It marked the end of India's freedom struggle. Independence was now placed on the immediate agenda of the national movement.
