Increase of pressure in the upper mantle leads to volcanic activity . When the pressure goes beyond a limit it need a crack or opening for the magma to come out . The gaps between the tectonic plates provides a path for the pressure to release . Due to this reason volcanic activity is seen majorly along the tectonic plate boundaries.
