Longitudes are known as meridians because in Geographical sense, meridians are great circles which are not parallel to each other but intersect each other at the North and the South Poles. Same stands true of the longitudes. All longitudes are great circles which meet at the Poles.

Only the lines of longitude are of equal length. Each line of longitude equals half of the circumference of the Earth because each extends from the North Pole to the South Pole.

The Equator and all diametrically opposite longitudes are called Great circles. Because they pass through or touch the centre of the circle. They have a radius equal to the radius of the sphere's centre

Explanation:

1. Rotation of the Earth causes night and day to alternate. Since we learned that the Earth's axis is tilted and hence the equator is not facing the Sun directly, different places on Earth would experience unequal length of days and nights—not exactly 12 hours of day and 12 hours of night all the time.

2. because on account of the oblique path of the sun towards pole than the vertical path along the equator, the length of dawn and twilight is greater, as it is nearly one hour near equator and 50 days at the pole.

3. On December 22, the Southern Hemisphere is tilted towards the Sun. The Sun shines directly overhead the Tropic of Capricorn. The places in the Southern Hemisphere thus experience the summer season. Therefore, 25th of December in New Zealand may be one of the hottest days of the year.
