There are different types of maps. Each kind of map serves a different purpose. The most common types of maps are:

$\bull \it \: { Political \: maps}$: These maps show the political divisions of a country. They show the outline of a continent or a country and its states. where cities, towns and villages are located.

$\bull \it \: Physical \: maps$: These maps show the physical features-mountains, hills, plains, plateaus, deserts and water bodies-of a place.

$\bull \it \: Thematic \: maps$: These maps tell us about certain topics or themes such as crops, industry, rainfall, roads, railways and airline routes in different areas.

A map is a drawing of the Earth, usually on a flat surface such as paper. The map of a place is a drawing of the place or a part of it. If we take a globe and flatten it, it becomes a map.

The heading of a map states what the map shows-distribution of forests, minerals, boundaries and so on. It also states whether it is a political, physica or thematic map.

Directions given on a map help us to locate places on it easily. There are four cardinal or main directions-North, South, East and West.

The key or the legend of a map explains what the colours and symbols used in the map mean.

A map is much smaller than the area it shows. A scale shows the distance between places on a map.

A physical map uses different colours to represent different landforms.

It is important for us to understand these colours and symbols because they help us to read the map. These colours help us to easily locate different physical features such as mountains, deserts or plains on a map.

Water bodies are shown in $\blue{blue}$. Plains are shown in

$\green{green}$. Highlands are shown in yellow or light brown. Mountains are shown in dark brown. Deserts are shown in yellow. Boundaries are shown in black.

Symbols are used in maps to mark cities, capitals, roads, highways, ports, post offices, hospitals, bridges, railways and so on. Examples of some symbols used.
