almost 200 years the British controlled India. It started out with the East India Company from about 1765. In 1857 there was a countrywide revolt which, which failed to shake off the English rule but transferred the power from the company to the crown. Only after continued pressure and new leaders did the British finally grant India it's Independence in Unfortunately the country was split into two as it was given it's freedom. However Pakistan celebrates it's Independence Day on 14th August while India considers

15th August

 it's Independence Day.

In 1947, the UK Parliament passed the Indian Independence Act and transferred legislative sovereignty to the Indian Constituent Assembly. Despite this King George VI remained India's head of the state until it fully transitioned to a republican constitution.

Jawaharlal Nehru was the first Prime Minister of India. He hoisted the Indian national flag above the Lahori Gate of the Red Fort in Delhi. This subsequently became a custom and now on every Independence Day, Indian Prime Minister hoists the national flag and addresses the nation.

It was in 1929, when Jawaharlal Nehru, who at that time was Congress President, gave the call for ‘Poorna Swaraj’ which meant total independence of India from British colonial rule. Earlier January 26 was chosen as the Independence Day and from 1930s onwards, Congress party started to celebrate 26 January as India’s Independence Day, till India attained its independence. Later in 1950, January 26 was chosen as the Republic Day of India as India formally became a sovereign country and was no longer under the British Dominion.

How 15th August became India’s Independence Day

The British parliament commanded Lord Mountbatten, the Viceroy of India, to transfer the governing powers to Indian leaders by June 30, 1948. According to C. Rajagopalachari, an Indian politician and independence activist, if Lord Mountbatten had waited till June 1948, there would have been no power left to transfer. That is why Mountbatten preponed the

date

to August 1947 and transferred all the governing powers.

Mountbatten also claimed that by preponing the date, there will be no bloodshed or riot. It was a misplaced hope and later he admitted that “wherever colonial rule has ended, there has been bloodshed. That is the price you pay.”

The British government presented the Indian Independence Bill in the British House of Commons on the basis of Lord Mountbatten's inputs. It was on July 4, 1947 that the bill got approved within a fortnight.

This was the end of the British rule in India and on August 15, 1947, India got its independence but by establishing two Dominions, India and Pakistan.

Mountbatten later also claimed that, “the date I chose came out of the blue. I chose it in reply to a question. I was determined to show I was master of the whole event. When they asked had we set a date, I knew it had to be soon. I hadn’t worked it out exactly then — I thought it had to be about August or September and I then went out to the 15th August. Why? Because it was the second anniversary of Japan’s surrender.”

This year India will be celebrating its 72nd Independence Day. Every year Independence Day reminds us that freedom is not free and that was hard-earned by the freedom fighters and patriots paying for it with their efforts and even their lives.

Celebrations of India’s Independence on 15th August 2017

This year in

2018

, India will celebrate its 72nd Independence Day to pay tribute and remember all the freedom fighters who had contributed a lot and fought for the Independence of India.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has appealed all the Indians to follow the Quit India Movement again. This will have a motive to encourage Indians to fight against corruption, communalism, terrorism, poverty and casteism. His motive is also to make India a clean country by 2022. He has requested people to take a pledge to fight against these evils and create a “New India”.

According to the reports, like every year this year too Delhi police is working hard to ensure incident-free Independence Day celebration at Red Fort.
