Continuting our series on quote of the day, today we present Theodore Roosevelt’s gem – Do what you can wherever you are. Quite simple and inspirational actually, but at the same time equally powerful if you are ever stuck in the loop of complaining and wondering why things are not working in your favour.

It is awful when things go wrong. Miseries seem to be piling up with not a single solution in sight. It is a weird thing, things don’t ever seem to get better on their own – they just seem to get worse.

The Question Why?!

This is probably an awful habit or a stock response. I am not sure how exactly to categorise this, the moment things go wrong, the first question we keep asking is – Why did this happen.

-> The next question is Why me?

-> This is followed by What is wrong with me?

-> Why do bad things keep happening no matter what?

Believe me, I am not trying to blame you for thinking this, but it is common that we are trained to think like this. The moment something goes wrong, the natural response is to find out the root cause. Although this is a good exercise to work on, the question always is about the timing of this exercise and being in control of it.

What if ?

What if I were to flip these questions around and ask instead

-> What do I really want?

-> How can I make this happen?

-> What is this experience trying to tell me or teach me?

-> What can I do now to feel better?

This may sound like a theoretical exercise if you are reading it afresh, But the last question is extremely important. We can wallow in helplessness all we want. But nothing is going to fix it.

Unfortunately, we have to do something about it. Although there are people out there who love you and want you to be happy all the time, they can’t really help you with some things.

Some of these thoughts, feelings are internal. The real question is how you start is by gaining control on them and taking charge.

Do what you can, where you are !

I cannot see a better relevance of this quote anywhere else but here. Things will be difficult and tough and they will never ever get better on their own.

It is almost as if there is a law of entropy, if something is going wrong – it will get worse. If you want better results, you have to take steer of it and make the difference you are yearning for.

Sure, it will be great to have help. Sure, the problems look overwhelming – but the problems got so big because they were not sorted earlier. This is not a reason to lament but nothing comes as a sudden shock, if we look closely, there are always clues as to why things went wrong.

Just like it took some time for things to get to a place where it felt horrible, it will take some time to make you feel that everything is in control. There is no magic wand that wil make everything go away in a single swoosh!

You will need to work at things that make you feel bad. You will have to be the person who takes control and grabs the problem by its neck. After all, feeling good in itself is not the solution, you can find the real one when you start with where you are and by doing what you can.

This is our take on the quote – Do what you can, wherever you are by Theodore Roosevelt. I am sure, there are different schools of thought to this. We would love to hear yours. Join our discussion with your comments and thoughts below.
