If you could go back, who would you want to meet ?
In a small back alley in Tokyo, there is a cafe which has been serving carefully brewed coffee for more than hundred years. But this coffee shop offers it’s customers a unique experience : the chance to travel back in time.
There are 5 rules however -
The only people you can meet while in the past are those who have visited the cafe.
There is nothing you can do while in the past that will change the present.
In order to return to the past, you have to sit in that seat(a particular table) and that seat alone.
While back in the past, you must stay in the seat and never move from it.
There is a time limit. You need to drink the coffee before it gets cold.
This forms the premises of ‘Before the coffee gets cold’ by Toshikazu Kawaguchi.
We see four visitors in this book -
one tries to confront the lover who left her,
one to meet her husband, currently diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, back at a time when he still remembered her as a wife,
one to meet her estranged sister for one last time,
one to meet the daughter they never got the chance to meet.
In spite of knowing they cannot change the present and they get to be in the past only for a mere few minute before the coffee becomes cold, what pushes people to yearn for this experience? Closure, hope, faith and more delicate human emotions are intricately woven into this beautiful story.
