The Mariner kills the albatross because he's an ignorant brute.
The mariner's just another sailor, an ordinary human -- like the wedding guest, like his fellow seamen, like us. And similar to the wedding guest, who "like a three-years child" must be forced to hear the Mariner's Rime, the Mariner too is held captive. Helpless and alone at sea, he is forced to experience the weird, terrifying, punishing -- and ultimately redemptive -- power of God.
