Alluvial soil :- • widely spread and imp. soil found in the entire northern India .

• Deposited by Indus , Ganga and Brahmaputra .

• consists of sand , silt and clay .

• suitable for agriculture .

• In dry areas , they are more alkaline , but they can be productive after proper irrigation .

Black soil :- • ideal for growing cotton .

• climatic conditions and parent rock material are imp. for formation of black soil .

• Found in the Deccan plateau region and parts of Maharashtra , M.P and Chhattisgarh .

• they have good water holding capacity.

• They develop deep cracks during hot weather and are sticky when wet .

Laterite soil :- • formed by intense leaching due to heavy rain .

• acidic in nature and not suitable for agriculture .

• found in western ghats region of Maharashtra , Orissa and parts of West Bengal and North eastern regions .

Red and yellow soil :- • made by crystalline igneous rocks in areas of low rainfall in the eastern and southern parts of Deccan plateau .

• they are reddish due to diffusion of Iron in crystalline and metamorphic rocks .

• found in Orissa , Chhattisgarh and southern parts of middle Ganga plains .

Arid soil :- • sandy in texture and saline in nature .

• lacks humus and moisture .

• can be suitable for cultivation after proper irrigation .

Forest soil :- • Found in hilly and mountainous areas where sufficient rainforests are available .

• soil texture varies according to mountains where they are formed .

• these soils experience denudation and are acidic with low humus content .
