Ustad Bismillah Khan was a great Indian shehnai maestro of Benares and awarded with the Bharat Ratna in the year 2001 being the third classical musician. Bharat Ratna is the uppermost national honour in India. He got the fame worldwide for performing the shehnai more than eight decades.

Bismillah Khan was the best known shehnai player during his lifetime. He is a inspiration to a lot of musicians. He belonged to a well know musician family from Bihar. His grandfather, Rasool Bux Khan was the shehnai-nawaz of the Bhojpur Kings court. He would practise for hours on the holy banks of ganga in Benaras. He invented new Ragas which fascinated generation of music lovers. He played shehnai on August 15, 1957 when India became independant. He played his shehnai from the Red Fort. He also performed in india and many other foreign countries. In 2001, Ustad Bismillah Khan was awarded the India's highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna. He also received national awards like Padmashri, Padma Bhushan and the Pudma Vibushan.
