He played his shehnai from the Red Fort. He also performed in india and many other foreign countries. In 2001, Ustad Bismillah Khan was awarded the India's highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna. He also received national awards like Padmashri, Padma Bhushan and the Padma Vibhushan.
