South Indian or Dravidian literature during Medieval age.
- Dravidian literature was composed in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam.
- Four Dravidian languages- Email, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam developed their script in the ancient age. However the oldest among these was Tamil literature.
- Three library gatherings- Santana were held in the ancient age. Many sages and learned men had recited their compositions at these Sangam meets /gatherings. The main themes of the Sangam literature were war, politics and romance. These works are collectively known as Sangam literature.
- The most famous among the Sangam literature were: Ethutokoi, a collection of eight poems, Tolkapppiyam, a work on grammar and Patthupattu, a collection of ten songs.
- Thiruvalluvur wrote the famous 'Kurai' which deals with many aspects of life and religion. Shilppadikaram and Manimekhalai are the other famous ancient works in the Tamil language.
- During the medieval age, a lot of Kannada literature were written. Kannada was Dravidian language.
- Poet Nruptrung wrote the great poetry collection 'Kaviraj Marg' in Kannada.
- Poet Pampa composed 'Adi Purana' describing the life and work of Adinath Adeshwar Bhagwan the first Jain Tirthankara. He also wrote 'Vikramarjun Vijyant' on the philosophy of Jainism.
- Poet Ponna wrote 'Shanti Purana' describing the life and work of 16th Tirthankara Shantinath Bhagwan.
- Poet Ranna composed 'Ajitnath Purana' describing the life and work of another Tirthankara Ajitnath Bhagwan He also wrote 'Gada Yudh'.
- Pampa, Ponna and Ranna are regarded as the Trio (Triumvirate) of medieval literature.
- Raja Krishnadevaray of Vijaynagar wrote 'Amukta Malyada' in Telugu literature.
