The government has given permission to increase the height of the Sardar Sarovar Dam in Gujarat by nearly 16.8 metres.
The benefits of doing this are manifold: more water for irrigation, mostly in the drought-prone areas of Kutch and Saurashtra, more hydroelectric power generated and so on. But the increase in height means that the reservoir size will also expand, displacing tribal people, who now live there.
The long-term benefits from the escalation in height of the dam do not nullify the short-term, concentrated cost that falls on those displaced by it. The point is to relocate and rehabilitate these people.

By raising the heights of the dams in a country there are several consequences negative as well as positive which are listed below :

Positive

● as higher as the dam would be it will create more hydroelectricity due to the water which will fall from more height. So, it will be helpful in providing more electricity to the country.

● it can be helpful for the purpose of irrigation or for agricultural purposes in a country. The more water provided for the agricultural purposes, the will be the production.

Negative

● displacement of people or families from the area in which the dam is likely to be built is one of the major bad or the negative effects of building a dam of a raised height.

● by the increase in height of the Dam there will be more and high risk of silting which will lead to backwater flooding and it won't be good.
