Symmetry in animals are mainly of 3 types:
1. Radial - Body is divisible into two equal halves by any plane which passes through the centre e.g. starfish, jellyfish
2. Biradial - body divisible into two equal halves by only two vertical planes.e.g.sea anemone
3. Bilateral- body divisible into equal right and left halves when cut by a vertical plane passing through the median longitudinal body axis.e.g.cockroach, man.

An account of the different type of symmetry in animals

Explanation:

  • Body plans are the group of developmental and structural characteristics used in the identification of groups of animal mainly such as Phylum. During the embryonic, larval and adult stage all organism share a similar body plan. As these plans are used to define taxonomic groups.
  • Body symmetry is one of the most distinguishing features of the animal. Looks of an animal depend on their type of symmetry like from one side to another.
  • The animal which looks same on all sides from the centre is referred to as Radial symmetry.
  • Some animals have sides looking mirror image of one another, such body plan is called Bilateral symmetry.
  • Tissues and Body cavities : The body cavity of animals which differentiate whether they have a true body cavity or no, which is known as Coelom. It is usually referred to as space between an internal organ and body tissues, these allow in the independent growth and movement. Some animals do not contain coelom as their internal organs are attached to the tissues of the body wall hence they are not independent.
  • In the case where the body cavity is lined by the tissue, it is known as pseudocoelom. These are also called as 'False cavity'.
  • Segmentation - These are the repeating parts of the body, where if one segment is damaged the other segment supports for its survival.
