The Northern plains have been formed by the interplay of mainly 3 rivers – Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra along with their tributaries. This plain is formed of the alluvial soil which provides fertility to the Plains. The plain being about 2400 km long and and about 240 to 320 km broad, is densely populated physiographic division. The rich soil and the favourable climatic conditions make the Northern plains agriculturally productive part of India.
