Hampi was famous as it contained the architectural ruins of a fortified city that was built during the time of the Vijayanagara empire. This city was a centre of commercial as well as cultural activities. The construction did not involve the use of mortar or cement. Rather, it relied on the technique of wedging the bricks together by interlocking. It had distinctive architecture with buildings having pillars, domes and arches. Moors, Chettis and agents of European traders often thronged its markets. Devadasis performed before the deity in temples and Mahanavami was an important festival that was celebrated.
