Important infectious agents are - viruses, bacteria, protozoans, fungi and forms.
- VIRUSES :- Viruses are obligate parasites, i.e., they live only inside a living host. Viruses have no cell like structure, so they cannot multiply by themselves. So they must capture a living host to show its multiplication.
- BACTERIA :-These are prokaryotic organisms . All bacteria are not disease causing. Many of them are beneficial for us. But some bacteria causes serious diseases, like tuberculosis and leprosy etc. Bacteria also multiply rapidly.
- PROTOZOANS :- These are unicellular organisms. Only a few protozoans are pathogenic to man. Some of these are Plasmodium (causing malaria), Entamoeba hystolytica (causing amoebic dysentery).
- WORMS :- These are small animals belonging to helminth group. Their reproductive rate is comparatively low. Important worms are - Ascaris, Taenia solium, hook worm etc.
