During the mid 19th century, Italy was divided into seven states out of which, only one, Sardinia-Piedmont, was ruled by an Italian princely house.

Northern Italy was under the Austrian Habsburg Empire, the centre was ruled by the Pope and the South was under the rule of the Bourbon kings of Spain.

Failed Revolutionary uprisings both in 1831 and 1848 meant that the responsibility of Italian unification now fell on Sardinia-Piedmont under its ruler Victor Emanuel II, who had to unify Italy through war

Through a tactful diplomatic alliance with France engineered by chief Minister Cavour , Sardinia-Piedmont succeeded in defeating the Austrian forces in 1859.

Under the leadership of Giuseppe Garibaldi, forces marched into South Italy and the kingdom of the two Sicilies and succeeded in winning local support in order to drive out the Spanish rulers

In 1861, as a result, Victor Emanuel II was proclaimed king of United Italy
