Typically, this involves a solid going into a liquid phase, but dissolution can involve other transformations as well. For example, when alloys form, one solid dissolves into another to form a solid solution.

For example, a mixture of insoluble hematite and elemental iron, when mixed in phosphoric acid, reduces hematite first into wüstite (FeO) and then dissolves the resulting FeO in the acidic solution to form phosphates of Fe.
