Meaning of thinking outside the box

Thinking outside the box is a metaphor, usually used to mean thinking in an innovative or unconventional way. In simple terms it means to be creative in your perception towards handling a matter.

Example

For instance one individual figured that electricity was too expensive to use and he needed to use light without having to pay the high fees that come with it. So in the midst of thinking, he came up with Solar panels. These panels get their charge from the sun. All you have to do is put them outside in the bright sun and in the evening you will have electricity in your house without having to  pay any bill.

This is a good example of someone thinking outside the box. That instead of thinking of how to pay electrical bills, he chose to think of how to use the natural resource which is the sun.( and the sun is free)
