Ion Examples. An ion is an atom or group of atoms where the number of electrons is not equal to the number of protons. When an atom loses or gains electrons, a positive or negative charge is the result. If electrons are gained, the ion is a cation and when electrons are lost, it is an anion. so every substance which can break chemically is example of a substance in which ions are present.
