The speed of an object is increased or decreased by applying force. If the force applied on the object is in the direction of its motion, the speed of the object increases. If the force is in applied in the direction opposite to the direction of the motion , it results in a decrease in the speed of the object.

E.g.- You can notice children playing with a tire and stick. When the children beat the rolling tire it gains energy or push and keeps moving. The energy transferred by the stick gives momentum to the tire. And the tire also gains speed.
