¤ The direction of velocity can change while experiencing a constant acceleration.
Like, in uniform circular motion there is a change in direction of the velocity and acceleration is constant in this case.
¤ If you turn the wheels of a moving car, you will be applying a force (hence acceleration) perpendicular to the direction of motion (velocity). The car will turn. If you hold that turned wheel constant then from the frame of reference of the car, the acceleration sideways will be constant. Of course in a car there are lots of other forces, like friction with the pavement, brakes, wind, etc that would complicate a detailed calculation
