Explanation:

Bell Jar Experiment

Place an electrical bell in the bell jar and pump out the air of the sealed bell jar. Turn on the electric bell. The sound produced by the bell is not audible to our ears. This demonstrates that the sound waves cannot travel through vacuum and it needs a material medium for its propagation.

Give an experiment to prove that sound needs a medium to travel

\small\fbox\red{Answer}

Take some water in a flask.Close the flask in such a way that a bell tied to the end of a thin metal rod is inside the flask.Shake the flask.We can hear the sound of the bell.Remove the cork and boil the water in it till the flask is filled with steam.After this,close the flask with the cork containing the bell.Pour cold water over the flask.The steam inside the flask is contensed and the quantity of air inside the flask is also reduced.

Now,shake the flask.The loudness of the sound heard is reduced because the quantity of air inside the flask is reduced.We will not able to hear the sound from the flask if we remove the air completely.

\small\fbox\red{This proves that a medium is required for sound }

\small\fbox\red{ to travel}
